Design Dilemma - November 2005
|
This month's Design Dilemma explores how a new
home can be designed to meet the most rigorous design
standards.
For a 2005 Showcase Home the design committee gave us
the following challenge: take the parlor, dining room
and powder room of a newly constructed home, and capture
the low country look of Charleston.
Although the rooms were small we were confident that
we could capture the casual elegance that defines the
low country look of Charleston.
|
 | | We started with the dining room with a traditional wood
base for the table and added a glass top to keep the
space airy and introduce a sense of casualness. For
the chairs we combined formal wood chairs with fabric
parsons chairs, which picked up the colors used throughout
the space. |

 |
|
In the parlor, directly across from the dining room,
we included a baby grand piano to create the feel of
entertaining and formal dining. |
|
 | |
In the powder room we used accessories to capture the
coastal aspects of Charleston. Throughout the entire
space we used wrought iron to compliment the wood features
of the furniture pieces and provide movement within
these three spaces. |
|
The result was the transformation of new spaces to the
casual elegance that has made Charleston famous.
